Today was our last day in Indochina, but we weren't flying out of Siem Reap until 5:30pm. Because it was also a "day at leisure" we asked the hotel for a late checkout, which they offered free of charge.
Outside the weather was still hot and muggy, and this fountain in front of the breakfast room/restaurant proves the point.
The streets were still busy, with all kinds of contraptions being pulled behind motorbikes - I wonder whether I could take my trailer full of rubbish to the tip behind a motorbike, and get away with it?
And the tuk-tuks did a roaring trade, not.
We had to get out of the room, so we decided to walk along the rather pretty, and relatively quiet, road along side the river behind the hotel.
We didn't intend going far, but we did - well, further than we thought reasonable in the heat. This Wat is beside the river.
It's decorations a bit OTT.
It's a pity we didn't discover the river earlier - it's probably attractively decorated and lit up at night.
This was s nice stretch of path, but as always it looks better than it was - and it didn't last for long either.
Now we know what fate befalls some roosters in this part of the world.
Our trusty driver and guide took us to the airport at 3:00pm where the check-in hall was particularly short of chairs for the growing number of people waiting for their flights to appear on the boars - us included. When ours did, there was a slight hiccup with our connecting flight in Saigon not being connected in the data base. Prue seemed unconcerned, but with my experience so far, I wasn't as confident.
Cambodian irony?
On the inside (the departure lounge) it was a different story - there were usual souvenir and coffee shops, and plenty of comfortable seating.
We spent our last Riels (and a few US$) on some cappuccinos - there's a bear in there...
And in Saigon/Ho Chi Minh City, we spent our last Dong (saved from earlier) on G&T's - probably the most expensive of the whole trip, but what else can you do with spare Dong?
That's all folks!
Rob's Blog will be back in September with Bordeaux to Barcelona, and Barcelona to Gibraltar, by bike of course.
